Top Gaming Subreddits Crack Down on X-Content: What You Need to Know!

A number of well-known gaming-related subreddits are prohibiting posts that direct to social media platform X (previously Twitter). The subreddits enforcing this prohibition include r/SteamDeck, r/MonsterHunter, r/WOW, r/PCGaming, and r/Nintendo.

These restrictions are part of a broader initiative on Reddit to ban content from X. Following the surge of prohibitions, several posts have appeared in different subreddits questioning whether their respective subreddit should implement a similar ban. At present, r/Halo, r/RPG, r/Valorant, r/AnimalCrossing, along with several other notable subreddits are currently deliberating, with most subscribers favoring a ban on content sourced from X. The severity of the bans differs across subreddits, with r/Nintendo and r/SteamDeck permitting screenshots, while r/WOW is also denying images.

The official justifications for the ban are varied, though numerous individuals point to Elon Musk’s recent conduct as the key reason. Musk, the owner of X, recently participated in President Trump’s inauguration and was observed performing a Nazi-like salute. Nonetheless, various forums have also highlighted X’s insufficient moderation and “increasingly malicious” content as grounds for the ban.

“This is something we have been considering for some time,” r/PCGaming moderator Shock4ndAwe stated. “X has become more and more hateful, toxic, and inadequately moderated. This has subsequently made us less at ease with allowing our subreddit to link to it. Not to mention the objectionable actions undertaken by Elon Musk recently.”

r/WOW, a World of Warcraft community with over 3 million members, noted that “recent political developments” combined with X’s diminishing reliability as a news source played a role in its determination. r/MagicTCG, a subreddit focused on Magic the Gathering, confirmed that its user base was “overwhelmingly in favor” of a ban due to the “Nazi behavior exhibited by the owner.”

Even though certain news organizations and individuals still discuss whether Musk’s gesture constituted a Nazi salute, communities in Germany and among Jewish individuals have asserted their belief that the gesture was antisemitic. Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, criticized Musk, declaring that while “everyone can express their thoughts, even if they are a billionaire, we cannot accept support for extreme right ideological positions.”
