The Southeast Japanese School and Community Center in Norwalk held its 62nd annual Cultural Festival and Ondo on June 7 and eight.
The competition featured meals and sport cubicles; an ikebana exhibit and Japanese doll (hina ningyo) show; bingo; a raffle; and ondo each days, with dancers coming from everywhere in the Southland.
Entertainment and demonstrations within the fitness center and outside included:
Saturday — Ukulele, Gakuen college students, karaoke open mic, Japanese classical dance, judo, Hawaiian Delites, koto, Hikari Taiko/Soran Bushi
Sunday — Kendo, hula, Gakuen college students, karaoke open mic, Happyfunsmile, Hikari Taiko/Soran Bushi
New York-based Happyfunsmile carried out a mix of Okinawan pop, electrical people songs (ultraminyo), ballads (enka), competition rhythms and Obon beats. They kicked off the ondo on Sunday with stay music.
