Summer season Enjoyable in Norwalk – Rafu Shimpo

The Southeast Japanese School and Community Center in Norwalk held its 62nd annual Cultural Festival and Ondo on June 7 and eight.

The competition featured meals and sport cubicles; an ikebana exhibit and Japanese doll (hina ningyo) show; bingo; a raffle; and ondo each days, with dancers coming from everywhere in the Southland.

Entertainment and demonstrations within the fitness center and outside included:

Saturday — Ukulele, Gakuen college students, karaoke open mic, Japanese classical dance, judo, Hawaiian Delites, koto, Hikari Taiko/Soran Bushi

Sunday — Kendo, hula, Gakuen college students, karaoke open mic, Happyfunsmile, Hikari Taiko/Soran Bushi

New York-based Happyfunsmile carried out a mix of Okinawan pop, electrical people songs (ultraminyo), ballads (enka), competition rhythms and Obon beats. They kicked off the ondo on Sunday with stay music.

SEJSCC will rejoice its one hundredth anniversary on Saturday, July 26, with registration at 4 p.m., group photograph at 4:30 p.m., social hour from 4:30 to five:30 p.m., and dinner at 5:30 p.m. For extra info, name (562) 863-5996 or go to sejscc.org.
