I’ve been reviewing photobooks in these pages for some time now.  The Great Acceleration is crucial I’ve come throughout.  In truth, it’s crucial work of any sort I’ve written about since 2023 once I mentioned the importance of Gravity’s Rainbow at 50.  Pynchon’s ebook is what I name a “systems novel,” a piece that locates characters inside cybernetic, environmental, financial, political, and cultural techniques.  The Great Acceleration is techniques images.  As Burtynsky’s cowl picture suggests, his main concern is environmental, how people in the previous couple of many years have accelerated their impression on planet Earth.  Although not at all times acknowledged as an environmental novel, Gravity’s Rainbow can also be most essentially an ecological work, one which posits Earth as a “living critter” that people had been created to destroy.
