Imaging Sustainability is an interdisciplinary analysis mission that investigates the environmental influence of image-making, each analogue and digital, by the lens of chemistry, visible arts, and neighborhood engagement.

Comprised of Dr Alexander Yuen (School of Chemistry), Dr Yvette Hamilton (Sydney College of the Arts), and Isobel Markus-Dunsworth and Remi Siciliano (Co-Founders of The Darkroom Social), the Imaging Sustainability group goals to remodel image-making into an environmentally accountable apply by decreasing chemical toxicity and selling sustainable alternate options. 

Digital and analogue pictures have important environmental penalties. While digital pictures is usually perceived as immaterial, it depends on extractive industries, energy-intensive knowledge centres, and water-dependent cooling programs. Analogue pictures, however, entails chemical processes that may contaminate waterways and ecosystems.

In response, a rising worldwide neighborhood of photographers and artists has embraced plant-based ‘eco-developers’ as a sustainable different to conventional analogue pictures, but the Imaging Sustainability group’s preliminary analysis reveals the complexity of attaining really eco-friendly photographic practices. 

As a part of their involvement within the Research Impact Accelerator with SSSHARC, the mission group has been inspecting the ecological footprint of those plant-based builders utilized in analogue pictures. The preliminary findings counsel that, regardless of their repute as sustainable alternate options, these builders could produce important silver nanoparticle waste, posing dangers to water programs and soil well being.
