Tri-State to see way forward for air journey as ‘air taxis’ make method to area

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – The way forward for air journey is touchdown within the Tri-State.

Southwest Ohio is poised to pioneer a brand new trade of small, electrical plane designed to taxi individuals and lightweight freight. They are referred to as AAMs, or Advanced Air Mobility autos.

“The potential with these new aircraft is that they can fulfill the needs for moving cargo, medical supplies, and passengers. Anything that we can move up in the air and off our roadways, that is better for relieving congestion. It’s better for safety,” said Robyn Bancroft, with OKI, the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments.

It just completed an electrical infrastructure plan for six regional airports in our area. It gives a path forward to create vertiports, where small, electric aircraft can take off and land vertically.

“We noticed the chance to assist with this planning effort and equip our native airports with info they wanted to take these steps ahead,” said Bancroft.

Up until a couple of years ago, the idea of a vertiport at Lunken Airport seemed decades away. That timeline seems to have shortened considerably.

“How shut are we to having vertiports in Ohio?” Local 12 asked Micah Newburg, senior director of aerospace and defense for JobsOhio.

“I feel we’re extraordinarily shut,” mentioned Newburg. “I think we’ll see vertiports within the next two to three years popping up all throughout the country.”

Newburg points to aircraft builder Joby opening a huge manufacturing facility near Dayton and the FAA recently fast-tracking the approval of AAM vehicles and vertiports.

“We’re the leaders in advanced air mobility in the country,” Newburg mentioned. “We’re the one state that has a whole ecosystem to check, certify, manufacture, and deploy this subsequent era of aviation at a business scale, and it’s going to be a multi-billion greenback trade within the making.”

In fact, Joby and Uber just announced this week a partnership that will create UberAir, allowing one-tap booking later this year in Dubai—and eventually in Southwest Ohio, where a trip from Cincinnati to Columbus is expected to cost the same as an Uber Black service—about $350—but making the trip in just 30 minutes instead of two hours.

The White House is anticipated to announce subsequent week a program that may title 5 states as testing grounds for air taxi companies. Ohio is likely one of the states within the operating.
