The Olympic Open Water Swim (previously referred to as the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim) is an open water swim held on the Summer Olympic Games because the end result of elite world-class open water swimming held each 4 years. It is the featured open water swim occasion on the Summer Olympic Games program.
History
- The first Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2008 was held within the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park rowing basin on the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The swimmers raced 4 loops of two.5 km every in 27°C water in an oblong course alongside the perimeter of the rowing basin.
- The second Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2012 was held within the Serpentine, a man-made lake in Hyde Park within the middle of London, England. The swimmers raced 6 loops of 1.66 km every in 19°C water in a geometrically formed course alongside the perimeter of the lake.
- The third Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2016 was held in Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The swimmers raced 4 loops of two.5 km every in 21-22°C water alongside a pentagon-shaped course offshore from the seashore.
- The fourth Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2020 was held in Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo Bay, Tokyo, Japan. The swimmers raced 7 loops of 1.43 km every in 29.3°C water for the ladies and 29.2°C water for the lads in an oblong course.
- The fifth Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2024 was held close to Pont Alexandre III alongside the Seine in Paris, France. the swimmers raced 6 loops of 1.66 km every in 29.0°C water for the ladies and 29.1°C water for the lads in an oblong course alongside the banks of the Seine.
- The sixth Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2028 will probably be held within the Belmont Shore Long Beach Zone within the Long Beach City Beach in Southern California on 17-18 July 2028.
- The seventh Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in 2032 will probably be held within the Southport Broadwater Parklands in Gold Coast City in Queensland, Australia.
