E. coli ranges fluctuate at Backbone State Park, locals say they keep away from swimming there

DUNDEE, Iowa (KCRG) – E. coli ranges at Backbone State Park’s seaside spiked above protected limits on Memorial Day, protecting swimmers out of the water.

By Friday, the water had cleared, dropping again to ranges protected for swimming.

Amanda Becker and Robby McKeman have come to Backbone State Park since they have been children. But the Oelwein couple mentioned fluctuating E. coli ranges on the seaside have grow to be a motive to remain out of the water.

“We don’t typically go in the water down here at Backbone just because of the E. coli levels,” Becker mentioned. “They usually go up and down, and we never really know where they’re at,”

Becker mentioned she remembers first listening to in regards to the E. coli points within the water when she was a baby.

“Then it just like became normal,” Becker mentioned.

Iowa DNR mentioned geese droppings are driving up E. coli ranges in Iowa’s waterways. At Backbone, McKeman mentioned the birds are exhausting to overlook.

“Usually there’s at least 75 adult geese out there,” McKeman mentioned. “And it’s a state park, so there’s not a lot of management. Like they could do at a wildlife preserve that a county has.”

Jenn Lohrer, a camper, mentioned she averted the water this weekend.

“We didn’t go down to the lake to go swimming,” Lohrer mentioned. “We drove past the pavilion there, and it was full. There were a lot of cars, but there were maybe less than a dozen people on the beach itself.”

McKeman mentioned whereas many individuals do keep away from the water, most individuals perceive the dangers in the event that they do go swimming.

“I think people get the general understanding that it’s not really about the skin-to-skin contact with the water,” McKeman mentioned. “It’s more about the consumption of the water when you’re down there swimming in it.”
