As the FIFA World Cup kicks off this week, immigration advocates in Maine and throughout New England have issued a travel advisory for worldwide guests amid stepped-up federal enforcement.

The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and its counterparts in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts say international guests might face searches of their digital gadgets at ports of entry, screening of social media accounts, and aggressive immigration enforcement, together with “racial profiling.”

MIRC’s govt director Mufalo Chitam stated she desires guests to concentrate on elevated enforcement.

“You need to travel very informed. What is happening here is real,” Chitam stated.

The teams are recommending that worldwide guests carry their passports and visa paperwork with them always, and register their journey plans with their nation’s embassy.

In a written assertion, Department of Homeland Security Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis dismissed these issues, and stated guests who come to the U.S. legally have “nothing to worry about,” including that DHS “is working around the clock with federal, state, local, and international partners to ensure a safe and secure environment for players, fans, and communities hosting these events.”

Boston is one in all 11 American host cities for this 12 months’s Cup, with seven matches scheduled for Gillette Stadium, starting with Haiti vs. Scotland on Saturday.
