Why Delta is betting massive on Asia to beat United

Delta Air Lines says it has its sights set on overtaking United Airlines because the main world provider.

Delta Air Lines is coming for the “world’s largest airline,” United.  

Speaking at the International Air Transport Association’s annual assembly underway in Rio de Janeiro, Delta President Peter Carter told CNBC that the corporate desires to develop into the most important U.S. provider for trans-Pacific journey, including, “the real goal is to become the leading global carrier, which is a pretty audacious goal.” 

Currently, United Airlines claims the title of world’s largest airline, primarily based on income passenger miles, which measures miles flown by paying clients. Delta truly carries extra passengers than United – over 200 million in 2025, in comparison with United’s 175 million passengers, in accordance to the respective airways.

However, longer flights can generate extra income per passenger than shorter journeys, and United at the moment dominates trans-Pacific journey. 

Delta has been increase its Asia presence, in partnership with carriers like Korean Air and China Eastern. On June 6, Delta launched a new nonstop service between Los Angeles and Hong Kong. And final June, Delta started a brand new direct service between Salt Lake City and Seoul, its Asia hub.  

In May, United introduced that later this 12 months, it’ll launch new year-round service between Chicago and Tokyo and new seasonal service between San Francisco and Sapporo, Japan. United’s Asia hubs are in Tokyo and Guam, and its partners embrace airways like Air India and ANA.  

“A lot of our growth has been international,” United CEO Scott Kirby told Bloomberg on the IATA occasion. “International has just been gang busters for us.”
