The Environment Agency has accomplished a programme of enhancements alongside waterways throughout the area.

The initiatives have ranged from Ditchford in Northamptonshire to Denver in Norfolk.

The company stated the enhancements would enhance public security, lock resilience and surrounding habitats.

The work, which price £5.2 million, has included upgrades at Bedford Lock on the River Great Ouse, and in Cambridgeshire at St Ives and Upware, close to Ely.

The company’s Katherine Briscombe stated: “With all these improvements and the prospect of a long summer ahead, there isn’t a better time to get out on the river.”

At Bedford Lock, downstream gates have been changed, as has the upstream touchdown stage, and the lock chamber wall has been stabilised.

The Environment Agency stated the change would “end the disruption” that boaters confronted with the previous lock and would make navigation safer and smoother. A remaining stage of the undertaking is deliberate for later within the 12 months to enhance the downstream touchdown stage.

At Titchmarsh Lock on the River Nene in Northamptonshire, photo voltaic panels have been put in to offer renewable power to function the guillotine gate.

It comes after the gate had reverted to guide operation as a result of its ageing parts.

Elsewhere, mechanical enhancements have been made to the guillotine gates at Brampton on the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire and at Wansford on the River Nene, close to Peterborough.

The Environment Agency added that it had moved 35 unregistered boats from the area’s waterways up to now 12 months.
