The physique of a swimmer who went lacking at a quarry in Milford over the weekend has been recovered, State Police stated Sunday.
First responders arrived Saturday afternoon to Shadowbrook Quarries following a report of a lacking swimmer and restoration efforts continued into Sunday. The identification of the swimmer has not but been launched.
The demise comes lower than every week after Milford authorities issued a warning concerning the risks of the quarries, that are a well-liked however unlawful spot for swimming.
Police urged individuals to not go to the quarries after an 18-year-old lady fell about 12 toes from a rock ledge onto jagged rocks beneath final Sunday. The lady, who reported briefly shedding consciousness after the autumn, was discovered bleeding in a number of locations, police stated. She was transported by Lifeflight to UMass Memorial Medical Center for therapy.
“While we’re thankful this incident did not have an even more tragic outcome, it serves as an important reminder that the Quarries are not a safe place for recreation,” Milford Chief of Police Robert Tusino stated in a July 21 assertion.
“The steep rock faces, unstable terrain, and limited access for emergency responders create an extremely dangerous environment where a single misstep can have life-altering consequences for civilians and responders,” he stated.
Other swimmers have drowned at quarries in Milford through the years.
In 2014, an 18-year-old from Providence, R.I., jumped into Fletcher’s Quarry and didn’t resurface. The teen’s physique was discovered a day later about 70 toes down and 10 toes away from the cliff. At the time, the demise was the second at a Milford quarry since 2007, and the fourth in nearly twenty years.
Last summer season, Milford police stated they might be cracking down on trespassing at native quarries by threatening thousands of dollars in fines.
