Hosted at Sumner Park, the occasion started because the city’s bicentennial celebration in 1989. Now, it has advanced right into a coastal music pageant.

“It’s bringing people together,” says Misty Gleason, co-chair of Sullivan Daze. “It’s one of the few times we all see each other and really commune as a community.”

Not solely will there be native music, meals vans, and greater than 30 distributors, this 12 months they’ve added cultural demonstrations.

You’ll be capable of strive your hand on the practices that constructed Sullivan’s heritage and economic system, together with wool spinning, forging, and granite work.

Among these demonstrations shall be blacksmithing, stone reducing, and sculpting demonstrations, placed on by Granite Garden Gallery on the park and at their location about two miles away.

“I was born and raised on the edge of a granite quarry up the road and just building with granite blocks as a kid and never really stopped,” explains Obadiah Buell, who based the Granite Garden Gallery together with his mom about 30 years in the past.

For him, the gallery combines the artistic with the historic, as he turns the considerable pure useful resource into one-of-a-kind artworks.

“It is a fascinating piece of the history here about how things were made, and every quarry had their own blacksmith shop, and they did a lot of their own woodwork, hand hewing and that sort of thing,” Buell describes. “I feel like a lot of people are losing the sort of hands-on experience in this more digital world of how a piece of stone works or how different stones work differently. So, it feels really meaningful to be able to preserve some of the historical elements, but also be an example of hard work can be really fun.”

For Sullivan Daze organizers, the pageant brings collectively the previous and the current, celebrating every thing that makes the Downeast city distinctive.

“We want our community and our kids to know where they came from, what’s been happening here forever, what the culture has been, what’s been our economy, which has been granite and lobstering,” Gleason particulars. “It’s gonna help everybody really recognize all the different facets of our culture.”
