Track and field

Saturday is the final day of competition in track and field, and it brings Canada’s most anticipated event of the meet: the men’s 4x100m relay. Canada is the reigning Olympic champion, thanks to the stunning gold-medal victory by Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney in 2024 in Paris. They also won Olympic silver in 2021, a world-championship gold in 2022 (when they shocked the United States on its home track in Oregon) and a silver at last year’s worlds in Tokyo.

The quartet was expected to remain together to chase its first Commonwealth Games title, but Canada has decided to replace Rodney with Duan Asemota for at least the first round. “The Commonwealth Games is a chance for us to introduce some newer athletes to the relay program,” Canadian track and field head coach Glenroy Gilbert explained to CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux.

Asemota, 29, reached the semifinals in the 100m earlier this week, where he and Eliezer Adjibi were the only two Canadians in the field. Rodney, 34, was disqualified for a lane violation in the opening round of the 200m, his only individual event (De Grasse did not participate in any solo races).

The lineup for the relay final, assuming Canada qualifies, is “nonetheless to be decided,” Gilbert said. “We have video, we have now evaluation on every of the legs. So if that does not come again favourably, we’re definitely prepared to make a change.” 

The first round is at 7:55 a.m. ET, with Canada running in the first of two heats. The top three in each heat and the next two fastest teams qualify for the final at 3:15 p.m. ET.

Canada is also eyeing a medal in the women’s 4x100m relay. The team is led by Audrey Leduc and national record holder Sade McCreath, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100m on Tuesday. Leduc, McCreath and teammate Marie-Eloise Leclair placed sixth at the 2024 Olympics, seventh at the 2025 world championships and took silver at this year’s World Relays. The first round is at 7:35 a.m. ET, and the final goes at 3:26 p.m. ET.

Elsewhere on the track, Lauren Gale will compete in the women’s 400m final at 7:20 a.m. ET. She had the sixth-fastest overall time in the semis. Canadian star Christopher Morales Williams failed to qualify for the men’s 400m final.

In distance running, 2021 Olympic silver medallist Moh Ahmed will line up in the men’s 5,000m final at 2:25 p.m. ET, along with Justyn Knight and Kieran Lumb. 

Three Canadians will run in the finals for the mile, which is back in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 60 years. The four-lap men’s race at 3:55 p.m. ET includes Foster Malleck, who had the fifth-fastest overall time in the qualifying round. But all eyes will be on Scotland’s own Josh Kerr, who recently broke the 27-year-old mile world record with a time of three minutes 42.66 seconds. Lucia Stafford and Simone Plourde are the Canadians in the women’s race at 4:45 p.m. ET, which closes out the track and field program in Glasgow. Stafford ran the second-fastest overall time in qualifying.

The other Canadians competing in finals on Saturday are Para athlete Maitlan Knoke in the men’s shot put F57 at 5:05 a.m. ET, Izzy Goudros in the women’s long jump at 2:10 p.m. ET and Nandini Sharma in the women’s 400m T54 at 2:28 p.m. ET. Nandini, a wheelchair racer, appeared to win silver in the 1,500m on Wednesday but was disqualified for obstruction.

Boxing

Coming off their semifinal victories today, Delgado will fight for gold in the women’s 54-kilogram division on Saturday at 6 a.m. ET while Al-Ahmadieh goes for gold in the women’s 60kg at 11:45 a.m. ET. Both will square off against an Indian opponent.

Judo

Canada will look to build on today’s success with another three judokas in action on both Saturday and Sunday.

The list includes Commonwealth Games veterans Kyle Reyes and Coralie Godbout. Reyes took silver in 2022 while Godbout placed fifth. Both compete on Sunday — Reyes in the men’s 100kg division, Godbout in the women’s 78kg.

Lawn bowling

The men’s pairs duo of Ryan Bester and John Bezear improved to 4-0 today by defeating Scotland in a crucial battle of unbeaten teams. Only the winners of the four groups advance to the medal rounds, and the Canadians can secure their spot by beating Norfolk Island (2-2) in their group-stage finale on Saturday at 7:45 a.m. ET.

The semifinals are at 2:15 p.m. ET, and the gold- and bronze-medal games are on Sunday at 4 a.m. ET. Bester, who’s competing in his seventh Commonwealth Games, is a three-time medallist in singles but did not make the playoffs in his solo event.

In women’s singles, Canada’s Kelly McKerihen (3-2) is one game out of first place heading into her final group-stage match against Malta on Saturday at 11:25 a.m. ET. The Para women’s pairs team of Jean Stairs and Anne Hibberd is 0-4 heading into its round-robin finale.

Track cycling

Canada’s best results so far on the velodrome are a fifth-place finish in the men’s team sprint on Thursday and a sixth by Maggie Coles-Lyster in today’s women’s 10km scratch race.

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday, with Canadians competing in a variety of events.
