“I was seeing people who would come to those programs on a regular basis,” she says. “We don’t always get the same people coming every time. But what I was seeing was people talking with friends and bringing other families to those events. The kids [were] excited to just have that permission to be creative and be free and use their hands and try things out, and have an opportunity to really explore and figure out, ’How do I make this work?’ I saw that really grow over time.”

At Lexington Park, households have responded enthusiastically to the maker packages, and Ford and Baldwin are trying ahead to serving the group with much more choices as soon as the devoted area opens.

“One of the things that we are really focusing on, especially once we have this space, is kids developing innovation and problem-solving skills,” says Ford. “We’re going to be combining a lot of our tools and a lot of materials that we have to set a problem for them to solve. They [will] have an objective, and work with teams of kids…. That’s the kind of program that we’re hoping to produce once we have walls.”
