Views on American Identification: Gallery Discuss — “Taking a Broad View: Portrait Photography from the Collection”

Curator Susan Chevlowe will focus on “Taking a Broad View: Portrait Photography from the Collection,” that includes greater than two dozen pictures in a wide range of portrait genres, together with conventional headshots, candid portraits, environmental portraits, group and household portraits. Marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, this system will take into account the position that images has performed in setting up American social identities, in addition to alternatives for self-reflection and empathy. Subjects vary from Frédéric Brenner’s girls rabbis, cantors, college, and college students in Manhattan to Larry Fink’s younger woman and her mom getting ready for her first communion within the Bronx, from GisMo’s Cuban American princesses in Miami to Toba Tucker’s Pueblo neighborhood members within the Southwest, and such leisure and superstar icons as Ray Charles, James Dean, Betty Friedan, Pete Seeger, and lots of others.
