OTTER TAIL COUNTY, Minn. — In Pelican Rapids, water, after a dry summer time, trickles previous Pelican Pete, considered one of Otter Tail Lakes County’s “Giants” in a summer-long contest.

Otter Tail Lakes County, a nonprofit selling tourism within the county, promoted a quest for vacationers and locals alike to go to each sculpture within the county.

“We definitely have a really high number of roadside statues and after doing some research for this, we (found we) have one of the highest concentrations of roadside statues in a 50-mile radius,” stated Tasha Rohlfs, partnership director for Otter Tail Lakes Country.

Participants stuffed out and checked off a contest card itemizing statue after statue: From the Loon in Vergas to the Melon in Vining. Rothsay’s prairie rooster, the Battle Lake fish and so many extra. Those who accomplished the problem may flip in a card to win prizes.

“The amount of pictures was incredible. One woman tagged us that she rented an RV from out of state and came with her children to come and see the Giants,” Rohlfs stated.

In Pelican Rapids, the statue promotions marketing campaign created a buzz on predominant road.

“People are not just coming here to see Pelican Pete, they are getting coffee at our local shops, visiting our farmers market,” stated Katie Gehring, Pelican Rapids group and financial growth affiliate.

But for a few years, Pelican Pete was anonymous.

“It was built in 1957 and 25 years later, there was a naming contest because the pelican had no name,” stated Pelican Rapids Mayor Brent Frazier.

From turkeys to tractors. The otter in Fergus Falls. The coot in Ashby. Small city delight producing tourism {dollars} with quirky Giants of Otter Tail County.
