Heat makes TV modifications: Details on what to anticipate with WPLG 10

With the Heat’s local TV package moving from FanDuel Sports to WPLG 10, here’s everything you need to know about what to expect:

▪ Two members of the FanDuel coverage won’t move over to WPLG — sideline reporters/hosts Kelly Saco and Jeremy Tache. The Heat, which is producing the telecasts, likes Saco and Tache but simply had no defined role for them.

Amy Audibert, who handled radio analysis and TV halftime hosting on road games, will now become the permanent sideline reporter/analyst for all WPLG games. She will join Jason Jackson on radio for the 16 regular season games that are not on WPLG. Those 16 games will be nationally televised.

▪ Ron Rothstein will remain a studio analyst, appearing on most pregame and halftime shows.

▪ Will Manso, WPLG’s sports director, will host pregame and halftime segments for all Heat road games and for weekday Heat home games. (He will host postgame shows on the rare occasions WPLG has a postgame show; more on that below.)

▪ Jackson will host pregame shows for weekend home games, and postgame shows those days on the rare occasions WPLG has them.

▪ In a major change, there no longer will be a stand-alone postgame show for weeknight Heat games and for most weekend games. WPLG confirms it will fold postgame segments into its late newscast; after the game ends, the station will switch quickly to news, with Heat postgame segments weaved into the first and second blocks of the newscast.

That could create awkward transitions from news anchors Calvin Hughes and Nicole Perez:

“Details coming in on a shooting tonight… And hey, here’s Erik Spoelstra’s postgame comments!”

Unlike FanDuel, expect WPLG to carry only parts of Spoelstra’s postgame remarks. WQAM 560 will air Spoelstra’s comments in their entirety. WPLG will air some player postgame interviews, but selectively.

▪ Eric Reid and John Crotty will call all of WPLG’s 66 to 68 regular-season games and all five preseason games, beginning Oct. 3 against Toronto.

▪ WPLG will carry a 10-minute pregame show for games that tip off at 7:42, which is the traditional start time for weeknight Heat home games (except Friday games, which start shortly after 8). There will be 30-minute pregame shows for some weekend games.

▪ Though conversations are ongoing, none of the five prominent cable/satellite providers that dropped WPLG have signed up to carry the station again. Those five are Dish Network, YouTube TV, DirecTV streaming, Hulu and Fubo.

For those without WPLG 10, viewers can watch games on the station’s app. According to WPLG, every Smart television has the capacity to display the station’s new app — which will carry the games for free — except Vizio. So if you have a Vizio television, and live in Miami-Dade or Broward, you would have several options:

A). Buy a new TV to stream the games or

B). Keep your Vizio TV but use a media streaming device, such as Roku or Amazon Firestick TV plus or

C). Switch to a provider that still carries WPLG, such as Comcast, Breezeline or DirecTV satellite or

D). Buy an in-home antenna to watch the games.

▪ The Heat is close to finalizing a deal with a West Palm Beach TV affiliate and also making progress in finding an affiliate to carry games in Naples/Fort Myers.

Amsler leaves

Eric Amsler, the Heat’s vice president of player personnel since 2023 and a longtime Heat staffer, is leaving to become assistant general manager of the Lakers.

Heat director of college and pro scouting Keith Askins is a potential replacement.

Amsler joined the Heat as an intern in 2004 and served as scouting and information coordinator (2005-07), scouting and player personnel coordinator (2007-14), director of scouting operations (2015-18) and general manager of the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Heat’s G League team, since 2019.

He was named the NBA G League basketball executive of the year after the Skyforce finished 22-12 in 2023-24.
