SEATTLE — Washington was well represented on the world stage this week, as the freshman duo of Nathan Green and Anthony Smith each earned top-8 finishes at the U20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia. Green, the U.S. Junior Champion, took fifth in the 1,500-meter final on Wednesday, while Smith reached the finals of the 200-meter dash, competing for Turkey.

Green’s phenomenal freshman spring carried into the summer. After making the Pac-12 final at 800-meters, Green would go on to advance all the way to the NCAA Outdoor 1,500-meter final, placing seventh to earn First Team All-America honors, and breaking the school record in the semis. The Boise, Idaho product then won the U.S. U20 title to book a ticket to Worlds. He reached the final by taking second in his semi in 3:45.80. In the final, Green finished fifth, behind two Kenyan and two Ethiopian athletes, crossing in 3:39.44.

Smith calls Snoqualmie, Wash. his hometown but has dual Turkish citizenship, and traveled to compete at Turkey’s U23 Championships after the collegiate season concluded, winning the national title to earn a spot at Worlds. Smith broke 21-seconds in all three rounds of the U20 meet, going 20.96 in the prelims, and then 20.83 in the semis. In the final, Smith ran 20.87 in the outside lane, into a headwind, to finish eighth overall.
