ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women’s soccer team began its 2022 campaign with a 2-1 win over No. 20 Washington State on Thursday (Aug. 18) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

Michigan (1-0) got on the board early, beginning in the 11th minute with a tally from junior Sammi Woods. Junior Sarah Bridenstine made a stellar run down the right flank, serving a weighted ball inside the six. Junior Kacey Lawrence distracted the Cougars goalkeeper with a dummy in front, and the service found Woods, who finished near post to give U-M the early advantage.

Ten minutes later, U-M doubled its pleasure with Bridenstine tallying the first score of her U-M career. Graduate student Meredith Haakenson played a ball from the centerline that found Lawrence back post. She then played a low ball to Bridenstine, who placed her shot in the back of the net.

The Wolverines carried the 2-0 lead into the half with a 5-4 shot advantage and a 4-1 shots-on-goal advantage.

Coming out of the half, Wazzou had two early chances, with the most promising being saved by graduate student Izzy Nino. Five minutes later, the Cougars cut the lead in half off a throw-in. The ball was serviced onto the foot of Margie Detrizio, who split a pair of U-M defenders and finished with the outside of her foot, lower left.

Overall, U-M successfully weathered a 13-0 shot deficit in the second half, keyed by seven saves from Nino. Of her seven saves, six came in the second half. The six stops were her highest total since her sophomore year versus Purdue (nine).

Freshman Aniyah League earned a starting nod at left back, while classmates Taylor Brennan, Vickie Jones, Kali Burrell, and Jenna Lang also made their U-M debuts in the contest.

U-M also improves to 4-0-1 in opening matches under head coach Jennifer Klein and 15-7-7 all-time.

Next up, the Wolverines will play host to Butler on Sunday (Aug. 21) at noon at U-M Soccer Stadium.
