CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 10 North Carolina women’s soccer team will host UNCW at Dorrance Field on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.

The Tar Heels are coming off a season-opening 3-0 win over No. 11 Tennessee on Thursday, giving Carolina its eighth consecutive triumph in its initial match of the season. UNC out-shot the Lady Volunteers 24-12 with Aleigh Gambone, Tori Hansen, and Avery Patterson each netting a goal.

Goalkeepers Emmie Allen and Marz Josephson combined to record the clean sheet with each recording four saves and playing 45 minutes apiece.

The Tar Heels played 23 players with Allen and true freshmen Maddie Dahlien, Tori Dellaperuta, Tessa Dellarose and Kate Faasse making their regular season debuts.

“We believe in giving kids the opportunity to play,” UNC head coach Anson Dorrance said. “We talk about playing for each other and once you’re up three goals like we were, let’s play the kids that have worked hard in practice to help us get to the position we’re in.

“Playing for each other is part of our DNA going back to the beginning when we were coaching the pioneers. It creates a wonderful team chemistry. Everyone knows that if we can get some separation, we’re going to try to play our kids and reward them for how hard they work in practice.”

UNCW also started the year with a shutout win on Thursday, blanking Queens, 2-0, on the road. The Seahawks scored twice in the second half, with defenders Chloe Mills and Talia Parrous each notching a goal.

The Tar Heels beat the Seahawks 3-1 in an exhibition match last season with the Emily Colton, Emily Moxley and Emily Murphy each scoring a goal.

The only previous regular season match in series history came five years ago with the Tar Heels posting a 2-0 victory in the 2017 Duke Nike Classic.
