DENTON — Three days after a dominate 5-1 season opening home victory over Abilene Christian, the North Texas women’s soccer team is back in action on Sunday hosting Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. CT.
Sunday’s match will be streamed on ESPN+.
UNT (1-0) won its season opening match on Thursday over ACU after trailing 1-0 early but quickly taking the lead less than 10 minutes later and scoring five unanswered goals. It’s the most unanswered goals UNT has ever scored in a single match after trailing.
The Mean Green outshot ACU 33-3 in the match. A third of North Texas’ shot attempts alone came from freshman Kat Burnell who set the program record for freshman shot attempts in just 41 minutes of action of what was her college debut.
North Texas’ head coach John Hedlund will be going for his 375 career victory on Sunday. When he reaches that mark he’ll become just the 25th NCAA DI women’s soccer head coach to reach 375-career victories. He’ll be just the seventh to do it all at one university.

Sunday’s match versus ORU (1-0) will be the two schools’ first meeting since 2016 when the Mean Green won 1-0 at ORU. North Texas leads the all-time series history 7-1-1. The Golden Eagles are led this season by first year head coach Austin Risenhoover. Oral Roberts won its season opening match as well with a 4-0 home victory over Texas A&M Commerce.
North Texas true freshman goalkeeper Dani Jacobson started the Mean Green’s season opener versus Abilene Christian on Thursday. She is the first true freshman goalkeeper to start a match since Jackie Kerestine in 2011. Kerestine was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
On Thursday versus Abilene Christian in the season opener, North Texas true freshman Kat Burnell set the program freshman record for single match shots (11) and shots on goal (7). The 11 shot attempts are tied for the eighth most in program history for any player. While Burnell didn’t score on any of her 11 shot attempts, she alone accounted for 1/3 of the Mean Green’s 33 shot attempts on Thursday and she did it in just 41 minutes played versus ACU.
Three-time all-conference honoree Allie Byrd missed the end of last season after tearing her ACL versus LA Tech. She was cleared to play on August 15 — exactly six months after having surgery and just three days before UNT’s season opener. In the season opener versus Abilene Christian, Byrd scored on her first shot attempt and just two minutes and 58 seconds into her coming off the bench into the game. The goal was the 19th of her career.
Seven of North Texas’ 11 starters versus Abilene Christian are newcomers: Brown, Burnell, Dennis, Jacobson, Major, Renfro, Roebuck. In last season’s season opener (vs. Southern U) only two of the starters were newcomers.
Sunday’s match versus Oral Roberts on Aug. 21 is exactly six years to the day from the last time the Mean Green played ORU. In fact, it’ll mark the third time in the 10 times they’ve met they play on Aug. 21.

Over its last 43 home matches, UNT has lost just twice.

UNT is 305-24-8 (.917) all-time in matches where they score 2+ goals. Since the start of the 2013 season, UNT is 91-4-2 (.947) in such matches.

In 27 full seasons, the Mean Green have never had a losing season. Head coach John Hedlund has been the program’s only head coach. Hedlund and legendary North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance are the only active head coaches who have coached at one university for over 20 years and never had a losing season.
