MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After recording a pair of assists in the Mountaineers 5-1 win over Saint Joseph’s on Aug. 21, sophomore forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

 

Heredia-Beltran helped West Virginia (1-0-1) earn its first win of the season, assisting on two of the teams five goals on the afternoon. Her first helper was earned on freshman forward Emily Thompson’s first career goal in the 49th minute. She dribbled into box and fed a pass into Thompson, who squared up and sent the ball above the reach of the SJU goalie.

 

The Wichita, Kansas, native earned her second assist not long after the first, sending a long ball into junior midfielder AJ Rodriguez, who was just above the top of the 18-yard box. Rodriguez dribbled in, eyed the keeper and knocked it into the net to give WVU a 4-1 lead. Heredia-Beltran finished the match with two assists, two points, three shots and a shot on goal, playing 41 minutes for WVU in the win.

 

The Mountaineers now prepare for their first road trip of the season, as they travel to No. 14 Penn State on Thursday, Aug. 25. Kickoff at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania, is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

Notes: With her start against Indiana on Aug. 19, fifth-year senior Jordan Brewster tallied her 80th career start in a WVU uniform … six Mountaineers also earned their first career action for West Virginia on last week, as senior midfielder/defender Maddie Moreau, junior midfielder Isabel Loza and freshmen Iman Mustafa, Emily Thompson, Taylor White and Natalie Zibinskas took the field for the first time in Gold and Blue … Moreau, Loza and Thompson also earned their first starting nods for the squad … Indiana became West Virginia’s 117th different opponent all time, as the two squads met for the first time in program history … WVU’s 16 shots on goal against the Hawks were the most for the squad since the last time it played Saint Joseph’s, tallying 15 at SJU on March 7, 2021.
