TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team has a new assistant coach in Julia Papanicolaou, Associate Vice President & Director of Athletics Dr. Lee McElroy has announced. She joins Darryl Michael as aides to third-year head coach Bre Lowe.

A native of Mahopac, N.Y., Papanicolaou played defense at the University at Albany, concluding her career last fall. She saw action in 29 games, including 14 as a senior when she had a defensive save. She had two other defensive saves in her tenure, which included an America East title and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the Great Danes in 2018.

Papanicolaou, a psychology major, was a standout at Lakeland High School, helping the team to three state championships as an All-State and All-Region performer.

Her coaching experience includes stints with the ADK Field Hockey Club (2018-22), Hudson Valley Hockey Club (2021-22), for which she also competed, and at the Shrub Oak Athletic Club Camp (2015-18).

RPI, which is coming off a 9-8 season and a second place finish in the Liberty League (4-3), makes its debut on September 1 when it hosts Hartwick College on a newly-installed field hockey-specific turf on Harkness Field. The Engineers are home again on September 3 against Geneseo (11am).
