PALO ALTO, Calif. – After a back-and-forth scoreless battle throughout regular time and double overtime, Michigan State field hockey fell to Stanford, 0-1, in a penalty shootout on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Spartans’ defense held strong in the first quarter, as Michigan State was able to keep Stanford scoreless despite a 3-2 Cardinal advantage in shots. Stanford again held the shot advantage, 4-3, in the second quarter, but the Spartans preserved the net to head into halftime 0-0. Graduate goalkeeper Monique Jardell recorded two saves in the half.
 
Michigan State held most of the possession in the third quarter. The Spartans saw a series of corner opportunities that resulted in five shot attempts but were unable to convert. Jardell added three more saves to her tally for the day. The game remained scoreless through the second half.
 
After a scoreless 60 minutes, the Spartans and Cardinal headed to the first overtime of the game. Michigan State held a 4-3 shot advantage in the first overtime, but neither team was able to get on the board. A scoreless second overtime led Michigan State and Stanford to a penalty shootout.
 
A successful shot by Stanford’s Caroline Guden gave the Cardinal a 4-3 shootout victory for the win. Celina Riccardo, Merel Hanssen and Lulu Fulton recorded successful shot attempts for the Spartans in the shootout.
 
Seven Spartans, including Georgia Davies, Hannah Jarvie, Isa van der Weij, Devin Reilly, as well as Fulton and Hanssen, recorded shot attempts. Sophomore Ellie Rutherford led the Spartans in shot attempts with four.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans return home to open Big Ten play against Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at Ralph Young Field. The game will broadcast on B1G+.
