BARK RIVER, Mich. — A career weekend individual performance from redshirt-sophomore Ben Hoagland and top 12 finishes from the starting duo of sophomore Hunter Thomson and junior Will Anderson propeled the University of Michigan men’s golf team to an 860 (-4) team total and a third-place finish today (Monday, Sept. 5) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate from the Sage Run Golf Course.

With an opening 71 (-1) from Anderson and an even-par 72 from Thomson, the Wolverines opened the fall season with a 291 (+3) total to position themselves third after the first 18 holes. Heading back out for the second 18, Thomson produced a 70 (-2), Anderson had a second straight 71 (-1) and junior Jude Kim used seven birdies to card a 68 (-4) and give U-M a 282 (-6) team total. With a 573 (-3) total through the first day of action, the Maize and Blue stayed in the third spot heading into the final round.

Getting off to a strong start, Michigan put itself in the hunt, with 71s (-1) from Thomson and sophomore Bavake Sihota and a 72 (E) from Anderson. Late round mistakes added up as the Wolverines repeated their third place finish from a year ago with an 860 (-4) opening tally — the third sub-par team finish in Zach Barlow era.

“Overall we are disappointed we couldn’t close it out today but there were some positives out there too,” said Barlow. “We learned a lot about ourselves and how difficult it is to close out a tournament win. We will be back and we won’t take these experiences for granted.”

In addition to the strong team performance, Hoagland paced the Wolverines as an individual with a career weekend. He opened the event by setting a new career-low with a 72 (E) and followed using five birdies and an eagle in the second round to top that with a new career-best 67 (-5), positioning him among the top five and just two shots out of the lead. With 13 pars and three birdies, Hoagland closed with a second straight sub-par round (71, -1) to tie for fourth with a career-low 210 (-6) — 19 shots better than his prior best.

“I was able to get off to a strong start and I putted really well yesterday,” said Hoagland. “My ball striking was very consistent the entire weekend. I tried to stay in rhythm and calm throughout all 54 holes. I just wanted to play my own game and I did. It was a great start to the fall.”

“Ben played great,” said Barlow. “We need guys to step up in those individual roles and send a message that they want to be in the lineup too. That’s how we will get better. I am very happy for him, he has worked so hard.”

In addition to Hoagland’s weekend, sophomore Yuqi Liu posted a 219 (74-72-73, +3) as an individual, lowering his career-best 54-hole total by five shots.

Overall, the Wolverines had all five starters among the top 30, led by Thomson’s tie for ninth (72-70-71/213, -3) and Anderson’s tie for 11th (71-71-72/214, -2). Sihota’s 218 (74-73-71) and Kim’s 219 (77-68-74) gave four in the top 25 as they tied for 21st and 23rd, respectively. Senior Pier Francesco De Col rounded out the starters, tying for 28th at 220 (74-73-73).

“Hunter and Will did what they do,” said Barlow. “They’re both great players who will tell you they didn’t have their best this week but salvaged a solid finish. That’s proof they are getting better.”

The Maize and Blue have a few weeks before heading back out to competition. U-M will head to New Haven, Conn., for Yale’s Macdonald Cup, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25 at the Yale Golf Course. Last year, Anderson’s medalist honor (204, -6) led the Wolverines to a runner-up finish.
