HERNING, Denmark – Gopher alumnae Sarah Potomak and Team Canada took home gold at the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship following a 2-1 win over the United States at KVIK Arena in Herning, Denmark. Six American Gophers earned silver after finishing the tournament with a 6-1 record. The nine total Minnesota representatives combined for 63 points (23g-40a) for four different nations. 

Fifth-year forward Taylor Heise was named the tournament’s MVP and Best Forward after leading all players in points (18) and goals (7) in her first IIHF Women’s World Championship. Her 18 points rank second all-time in a single Women’s Worlds tournament. Amanda Kessel, who represented the United States in her seventh IIHF Women’s World Championship, tallied 17 points (6g-11a) – third most all-time in a single tournament. Heise and Kessel were each named to the Media All-Stars Team.

In her second stint at Women’s Worlds, Sarah Potomak earned her first gold medal after winning silver in 2017. Lee Stecklein moved her Women’s Worlds medal count to seven, while Kessel (6), Brandt (5), Pannek (4) and Zumwinkle (2) each added to their medal totals after the 2022 edition of the global event. Heise earned her first senior national team medal in her first tournament with the team.

Bouveng, Heise, Laitinen and Zumwinkle will return to Minneapolis and trade in their national team colors for Maroon and Gold for the 2022-23 season. The puck drops on the 26th season of Gopher Women’s Hockey on Oct. 7 at Ridder Arena against WCHA-rival Bemidji State.
