HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HBU trailed for more than 40 minutes but junior Katie Marker netted her third goal of the season to even things up in a second half controlled by the Huskies that ultimately ended with HBU settling for a 1-1 draw at Pritchett Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies (0-3-2) out-shot the host Bearkats (0-3-1) 18-6 over the course of the match with seven attempts on goal to SHSU’s three. HBU also earned eight corner kicks to just five for the Bearkats.

Junior Evelyn Slaughter had the first shot on goal in the match, putting a 10th minute shot to the bottom right corner of the goal but Sam Houston’s keeper made the stop. The Bearkats’ Lexi Primacio opened the scoring at the 17:13 mark, scoring to the top shelf with an assist from Landri Townsend. In total, HBU peppered 10 shots toward the Sam Houston goal but Slaughter’s early attempt was the only on target.

HBU keeper Chloe Bagshaw was quickly forced into a save in the first minute of the second half before both teams went more than 10 minutes without finding space for a shot. The Huskies earned a corner kick at the end of the 58th minute with senior Ryan Ford taking the kick and setting up Marker for her third goal of the season at the 58:27 mark, tying the game at 1-1. HBU put five more shots on the mark over the final 30 minutes but Sam Houston’s Savannah Hall was up to the task in goal, keeping the game knotted.

Marker’s goal was her third of the season and this in the last four games. The assist from Ford was her second of the season and gives her 10 for her career, tying her for ninth in the HBU record book. Bagshaw finished with three saves between the pipes.

The Huskies open Southland Conference play on Friday, Sep. 9, against Division I and conference newcomer Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, Texas at 7:00 p.m. HBU will then play its home opener on Sunday, Sep. 11, at Sorrels Field against Houston.
