AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Claire Danahy scored two goals in the second half, while senior Steph Gottwals notched a goal of her own, helping No. 20 University of Massachusetts to a 3-1 victory over Boston University on Monday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. Freshman Mali Herberhold earned the assists on both of Danahy’s goals in the win.

After a scoreless first half with even chances, the Terriers broke open the scoring with a goal from Tess Csejka at the 1:16 mark of the third quarter. Danahy knotted it up just two minutes and 27 seconds later, assisted by Herberhold, before Gottwals scored an unassisted goal at 7:15 in the quarter to make it a 2-1 contest.

Six minutes and 38 seconds in the fourth quarter, Danahy struck again, taking a pass from Herberhold once more, to give the Minutewomen a cushioned 3-1 lead.

With 6:07 left on the clock, the teams went into a delay, due to lightning in the area. The two programs resumed play, while UMass continued to hold off BU, despite an extra forward, to bring the game to its final score of 3-1.

Myrte van Herwijnen posted six saves, allowing only one goal on the day. Caroline Kelly of BU started in net, collecting four saves, before Kate Thomason entered in the second half, giving up three goals and recording no saves.

The Terriers outshot the Minutewomen, 19-13, and the two teams were even on penalty corners with seven apiece. UMass tallied seven total saves, with six from van Herwijnen and a defensive save from Emilie Keij, while BU finished with four total saves.
