After working in risk management and insurance for 34 years and putting two children through college, Nancy Knight-Brown started to consider what retirement could look like for her family.

“I knew if my husband and I wanted to be comfortable [in retirement], we would have to find something that we enjoyed, [something that] didn’t feel like a job,” Knight-Brown said.

Knight-Brown said it came to her in a dream about a year ago.

“I have always found joy in dancing,” she said. “When I was growing up and even with my daughters, dance has always been a part of my life, so when I had a dream that I opened my own dance studio, I knew it was meant to be.”

After looking at several locations, enduring some difficult business decisions and a delayed build-out process, Knight-Brown officially opened the doors to NKB Dance & Expressions on July 27.

“I am so grateful for the support I have had on this journey,” Knight-Brown said.

Knight-Brown said she has had great guidance from her family and friends, including her previous fitness instructor and friend Sekoya Waddy.

After living in Pflugerville for 10 years and Georgetown for more than five, Knight-Brown said she used to drive to Austin to participate in Waddy’s Zumba class.

Waddy is now NKB’s studio consultant and discovered several of NKB’s instructors.

“Our team is very talented and versatile,” Knight-Brown said.

Knight-Brown said NKB Dance & Expressions’ main priority is to help the community balance fun with healthy lifestyle choices.

“This is a place where fitness and fun meet,” Knight-Brown said. “We want our [dancers] to feel accepted while also prioritizing their physical health as well as their emotional well-being.”

Knight-Brown said the studio offers instruction in areas such as youth ballet; Senior Sunrise; Parent & Tot movement; and adult Zumba; as well as specialized classes such as African Movement, line dance and Gospel Groove. While there is no competitive aspect involved, Knight-Brown does plan to offer recitals and showcases as dance classes continue to grow.

NKB has two larger studios to accommodate bigger classes. Knight-Brown said she is open to hosting private events including baby showers and other celebrations in these spaces.

“I am ready to get people in the door,” Knight-Brown said.

Class rates and memberships vary by age group, skill level and length of membership. A monthly pass for adult fitness classes including Zumba, Xtreme Burn and African Movement is $160. Youth monthly classes range from $240-$375.
