CINCINNATI – Lauren Bastian notched a late equalizing goal in the 83rd minute as the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team opened conference play with a 2-2 draw against Memphis at Gettler Stadium on Thursday night.

 

With the tie, the Bearcats move to 4-1-4, 0-0-1 AAC on the season.

 

The Bearcats advanced the ball in the attacking third late as Bastian controlled a touch right outside the 18-yard frame and fired a shot that escaped a save attempt from the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

 

Bastian is the 10th different Bearcat to score this season.

 

Memphis got on the scoreboard first when Saorla Miller found the back of the net in the 2nd minute. The backline settled in for the remainder of the first half as the Bearcats held a 6-4 shot advantage, but was unable to capitalize before the break.

Cincinnati continued to attack right out of the half as the Bearcats were able to even the match when Megan Smith found herself on the receiving end of a set piece from Ashley Barron. Smith located the ball inside the goal area, chipping it over the goalkeeper for her third goal of the season in the 60th minute.

Memphis quickly took the lead back when Mya Jones scored her third goal of the year two minutes later in the 62nd minute for the 2-1 lead before the Bearcats’ late equalizing goal. 

Cincinnati finished the match outshooting Memphis 12-8. The Bearcats remain undefeated at 4-0-2 when possessing the shot advantage.

 

Anna Rexford secured three saves to extend her season total to 21.

 

Cincinnati continues conference play when they travel to face Central Florida on Thursday, Sept. 29.
