A horse named Shocker was rescued Wednesday afternoon by a team of San Diego Humane Society employees and volunteers after he wandered into an empty swimming pool in his Jamul backyard — and was unable to get out.

Efforts to have the horse walk out of the pool on his own using a ramp failed because the horse was too heavy and the ramp broke, said Humane Society Capt. Danee Cook. “It was too deep, he could not climb out,” she said.

After the horse’s owner called the county Animal Services Department for help, county workers reached out to the Humane Society, which has special equipment to use in such emergencies.

The rescue team went to the home on Proctor Valley Road and assembled a rescue tripod.

Before Shocker was hoisted out of the pool, a veterinarian gave the horse a mild sedative, and rescuers placed a protective helmet on his head to limit his vision.

The horse was loaded into a special sling and rescuers — using people power — lifted the animal up and out of the pool. The horse was uninjured and came out off sedation without any problems, Cook said.

She said Shocker “kind of had free rein” at the Jamul property, and officials planned to talk to the horse’s owner about securing him better so he won’t wander into trouble again.
