MANKATO, Minn. — The Minnesota State women’s hockey team picked up its first win in exhibition play 5-1 against Manitoba this evening at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

The Bison opened the scoring early in the first at the 7:03 mark of the first period. Kylie Lesuk hammered home a rebound resulting in Manitoba’s first and only goal of the game off a Molly Kunnas shot. In the back end of the first period, senior defender, Anna Wilgren intercepted a pass in the offensive zone making the most of her opportunity. Wilgren sent a shot top right over the glove of Manitoba goaltender, Kimberley Davidson to even the game at one at the 14:37 mark of the period. MSU held a decisive 11-4 lead in shot as the first period came to a close.

The Mavericks did not wait long to get the scoring started coming out of the first intermission. Senior defender, Taylor Wemple received a great heads-up pass in the high slot from freshman forward, Taylor Otremba burying her shot to give MSU its first lead of the night at the 2:43 mark into the second period. In the back half of the second period, the Maverick bench erupts after senior forward, Brooke Bryant delivered a gorgeous pass to Anna Wilgren who lifted a shot over the shoulder of Davidson for her second goal on the night to extend the Mavericks lead to 3-1 at the 14:52 mark of the second. Just over a minute into play, sophomore forward, Alexis Paddington strips a Manitoba player of the puck in an offensive zone scrum sending a missile that rockets through the goaltender’s five-hole at the 15:13 Mark of the period.

Minnesota State came into the third period with a commanding 30-6 lead in shots and senior forward, Claire Butorac had no plans on stopping. MSU took a 5-1 lead at the 11:00 mark of the period off a Butorac ripper from the top of the face-off dot. The Mavericks held down the Bison to only 12 shots leading to a Mavericks victory.

The Mavericks used all three goalies on the roster as each covered a period. The platoon of Breg, Barbro, and Kelley stood tall making 11 of 12 shots faced. MSU out-shot Manitoba 43-12 in its decisive win over the Bison.

Up next, MSU will look to kick off the season on Sep. 30th at home against Ohio State in its first weekend series of the season.
