HARRISONBURG, Va. – The App State volleyball team opened Sun Belt Conference action on Friday in Harrisonburg, Va., falling, 3-0, to James Madison.
 
The Mountaineers will return to the court at 1 p.m. on Saturday for their second clash with JMU. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

Sophomore Lulu Ambrose led the team in kills, posting 12. Senior Sam Bickley and junior Sophie Cain tallied 16 assists each while senior McCall Denny and freshman Kenady Roper posted 13 digs apiece. Cain led the team in aces with two and senior Sarah Missroon notched three blocks.
 
The Mountaineers led the Dukes in digs (43-41).
 
In the first set, App State tied things up at 5-5, with a kill from Denny. After a JMU error and a kill from Ambrose, the Mountaineers took the lead, 7-5. Tied at 14, the Mountaineers went on a four-point run that included kills from Missroon, junior Meghan Dombrowski and Ambrose, to take the lead, 18-14. The Black and Gold broke a 22-22 tie with a kill from Denny and an ace from Cain to lead, 24-22. JMU answered with three consecutive points to lead 25-24. Missroon tied the score at 25 with a kill. The Mountaineers kept up with JMU, tying the score a final time at 27 all with a kill from Ambrose, before the Dukes took the set, 29-27.
 
App State and JMU matched each other point-for-point once again in the second set, with neither team maintaining a considerable lead. Down 9-7, the Mountaineers went on a three-point run with a block from freshman Maya Winterhoff and Ambrose, and kills from junior Madison Baldridge and Ambrose. App State notched another three-point run to take a tight lead of 16-15. A kill from Dombrowski tied things up at 18 all and Ambrose tied things up once again at 19 all, but it wasn’t enough as the Dukes gained momentum to take the set 25-21.
 
Early in the third set, Denny recorded a kill to tie the score at four all, but JMU broke away on a four-point run to lead 8-4. The Dukes went on another four-point run to extend their lead to 15-7, creating a deficit the Mountaineers struggled to recover from. JMU took the final set 25-14, taking the match 3-0.
