PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball dropped its Ivy League opener in a five-set affair against Yale on Friday (Sept. 23). The Bears won the first two sets but dropped the final three to the Bulldogs.
 
Brown (4-6, 0-1 Ivy) hit .259 with four Bears finishing with double-figure kills. Beau Vanderlaan was tops on the team with 17 kills. The sophomore hit .467 on the night with just three errors. Sophia Miller was second on the team with 12 kills. Both Cierra Jenkins and Kate Sheire had 10 kills. Jenkins hit a team-high .526 and Sheire finished hitting .333. Kayla Griebl had eight kills for the Bears.
 
Jenkins guided Brown’s offense with 43 assists.
 
On defense, Brown held Yale (9-1, 1-0 Ivy) to just .179 hitting. Audrey Leak and Cara Shultz led the Bulldogs with 16 kills.
 
The offenses had no issues in the first with both teams hitting over .300. Brown took an 18-12 lead after kills by Griebl and Miller but Yale fought back with seven-straight points to go up 21-19. Down 23-21, Brown scored four of the next five points, including fighting off a set point, earning set point at 25-24. Yale scored two points to earn another set point but back-to-back kills by Vanderlaan and an error gave Brown a 28-26 set win.
 
Brown’s offense upped its performance in set two, hitting .526, while holding Yale to -.036. Up 10-7 Brown broke the set open with an 8-1 run that featured three blocks. The first block came from the duo of Gabby Derrick and Griebl, with the last two coming from the duo of Vanderlaan and Sheire. Back-to-back kills by Miller earned Brown a 25-12 set win, putting the Bears up 2-0.
 
Yale’s defense slowed down Brown’s offense in the next two sets. The Bears hit .111 in the third and .237 in the fourth as the Bulldogs tied up the match. Brown scored three-straight points late in the third set to tie it at 22 but Yale scored three of the next four points to win 25-23.
 
The Bears allowed a 6-0 run in the fourth to give Yale control of the set. When Brown pulled within one, five of the next six points went to the Bulldogs, who held on to a 25-22 set win.
 
The fifth set went back-and-forth with Yale taking a 10-7 lead after two-straight points. Sheire and Vanderlaan added back-to-back kills to make it 11-10 in favor of Yale. The next three points were won by Yale to give the Bulldogs match point. Brown fought off one point but couldn’t manage to fight off any others with Yale earning a 15-11 set victory.
 
UP NEXT
Brown will hit the road as Ivy League play continues. The Bears will be at Cornell on Friday (Sept. 30) before playing Columbia on Saturday (Oct. 1).
