USAFA — The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team defeated the Air Force Academy Falcons, 4-1, on Friday evening in the Cadet Ice Arena.

First Goal (1-0 Black Bears): With 5:44 remaining in the first period, Grant Hebert scored the first goal of the 2022-23 season for the University of Maine. Luke Antonacci started the rush. Hebert picked up the puck from Antonacci then dished it ahead to Cole Hanson. The transfer from Colgate put a pass directly on Hebert’s stick which then found the back of the Air Force net. At the end of one period, Maine led 1-0.

Second Goal (2-0 Black Bears): During his second career period, Brandon Holt scored the second Black Bear goal of the night. Killian Kiecker-Olson possessed the loose puck and found Reid Pabich. The freshman forward flipped a pass to Holt, who did the rest.

Third Goal (2-1 Black Bears): Mitchell Digby scored a power play goal for the Falcons in the final two minutes of the second period. It was the final goal of the period as Maine held a 2-1 lead with 20:00 remaining.

Fourth Goal (3-1 Black Bears): While on the penalty kill, Lynden Breen gave his squad its second two goal lead of the evening. Ben Poisson accompanied his linemate up the ice but was nothing more than a decoy. Breen waited patiently for the goaltender to move off his line, and that he did. The junior forward was not done scoring.

Fifth Goal (4-1 Black Bears): Less than two minutes later, Breen scored his second goal of the night. His wrister deflected off the crossbar and into the Falcons’ net. It was the final goal of the non-conference matchup as Maine won, 4-1.

Notes: Jacob Mucitelli stopped 20 shots for the Black Bears, while Aaron Randazzo recorded 28 saves between the pipes.

Maine went 0 for 3 on the power play, as the Falcons were 1-4 on its player advantages.

Grant Hebert, Brandon Holt, and Lynden Breen (two) were the goal scorers. Cole Hanson, Luke Antonacci (two), Killian Kiecker-Olson, Reid Pabich, and Ben Poisson (two) were all credited with an assist or two.

Next: Maine will complete the Ice Breaker Tournament with a contest tomorrow, October 8 at Denver. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 PM MT/6 PM ET.
