CARY, N.C.Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller of the University of Michigan women’s tennis team reached the doubles final of the ITA All-American, falling 6-1, 6-2 to NC State’s Nell Miller and Amelia Rajecki on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9) at Cary Tennis Park. By reaching the final match, Miller and Brown have received a berth into the doubles main draw of the ITA Fall National Championships at the end of the fall season.

The Wolverines fell behind early in the first set, getting broken on the deuce point as NC State took a 3-1 lead. The Wolfpack duo backed up the break in the next game for a 4-1 lead. That was all the space needed as NC State recorded a 6-1 first-set win.

The second set featured three straight breaks of serve to start before NC State held in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. U-M held on its serve at 3-2, but NC State did the same in the following game to keep the break. The Pack grabbed another break for a 5-2 lead, serving out the match in the next game as U-M finished runner-up. Brown and Miller were the only qualifiers to make it to the final day of main draw action at the tournament.

Miller and Brown grabbed one of six qualifying berths into the main draw after going 3-0 in qualifying. The Wolverine duo knocked off No. 55-ranked Emily Meyer and Ara Teixido-Garcia of Memphis, 8-4, in the first round to ignite their run.

Once in the main draw and the format switched to two sets with a 10-point breaker in lieu of a third set, Miller and Brown did not drop a set en route to the final match. They grabbed two wins over ranked teams, including a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over No. 3-ranked Anya Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth of Wake Forest.

Following another straight-set win in the quarters, Michigan’s semifinal opponents withdrew to give U-M a spot in the championship match.

Julia Fliegner, who punched her ticket to the singles main draw by winning the ITA Summer National Championship, made a run to the semifinals of the consolation draw. After dropping her first-round match in the main draw, the No. 125-ranked Fliegner got a pair of ranked wins in the backdraw. Fliegner’s tournament was highlighted by a 7-6 (4), 6-0 win over No. 16-ranked Carol Lee of Georgia Tech. After falling behind 4-2 in the first-set tiebreaker, Fliegner ripped off five straight points to take the set. It was all Fliegner in the second set as she recorded her second win of the event.

Miller and Brown also competed in singles action at the tournament. Brown grabbed a win over No. 22-ranked Carmen Corley in the first round of singles qualifying but dropped a straight-set match in the next round to be eliminated. Miller went 0-2 in the singles main draw.

U-M continues fall action next weekend (Oct. 14-16) at the Ohio State Invite.
