The Kiski Area High School varsity swim team is making a splash with a new fundraiser.

Team organizers hope to boost swim safety awareness in the community and showcase the program during the Oct. 29 clinic.

A Halloween swim theme will welcome registered participants during the swim session in the high school pool.

“We’re really trying hard to breathe some fresh air into the program,” said swim team secretary and volunteer Kris Kunkle. “We saw a community need.“

Members of the swim team will instruct on technique, stamina and water safety, with some fun thrown in with games and prizes.

New head coach Ryan Berberich said the fundraiser targets younger kids to expose them to swimming on a school team.

The clinic is open to preschool and elementary school children ages 4 to 10.

Participants will be divided into groups based on their comfort and swimming skill level.

Swimmers will be supervised by lifeguards and the team coaching staff and swimmers.

You do not have to be enrolled in the Kiski Area district to participate.

Parents or guardians may stay and watch or drop off.

A waiver form is required during registration.

“Our big reason for doing this is to generate more interest in the sport of swimming and our program at Kiski Area,” said Berberich, a former Kiski swimmer and 1986 alumnus.

The 2022-23 varsity swimming team is coed and has 24 members.

“It’s down a little bit, maybe because of the pandemic. The years we have the Summer Olympics, interest seems to be a bit higher,” Berberich said.

The middle school swim program typically feeds the high school program.

The high school pool is heated, is 25 yards long and has six lanes.

The team hosts three fundraisers annually. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of new team warmup gear and training equipment.
