The story of the 2022 St. Joseph’s Catholic School boys swim team’s state championship is one of depth.

It’s because the program is about as deep as an olympic swimming pool. Saturday at the University of South Carolina Natatorium that showed as St. Joseph’s won the Class AAA SCHSL State Championship as a Class A school. The Knights beat out Greer Middle College by 13 points to win the title with a team total of 376 points to GMC’s 363.

It was the St. Joseph’s boys swim teams sixth straight team state title. But SJCS didn’t take first in any events, of the 15 boys swimmer that competed for the Knights, 12 scored.

Ultimately the Knights were able to accumulate enough points through high finishes in almost every event. Colin Jordan took second in the 100 Freestyle and third in the 200 Freestyle. The St. Joseph’s 400 Freestyle Relay team of Connor Farrell, Evan Harman, Owen Byrd and Jordan took third place in the event.

“Every win has its own unique characteristics, athletes and circumstances,” said St. Joseph’s swim coach Becky Van Evera said. “We are blessed to have a tight knit group of athletes that when the going gets tough they focus on the greater good of the team. That makes this win really special … not one first place finish but they all came out champions.”

On the girls side, St. Joseph’s finished third as a team. Sylvia Walker, a senior, won the 100 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle.

Due to not enough schools having swim teams, the SCHSL combines Class A, AA and AAA teams in to one meet and the winner is the Class AAA state champion.
