Shots in the Darke

What a great time of the year for sports enthusiasts! Football at all levels, baseball playoffs, high school tournaments in tennis, cross country, soccer, and volleyball; the list goes on and on. If you don’t have your TVs, snacks, viewing schedules, and excuses to your spouse or significant other for your time spent in front of the tube or away from home already lined up you need to get your act together!!

Let’s take a look at some local topics beginning with congratulations to all of the Homecoming Queens and Kings (or Chief Green Wave in Greenville’s case) around the county. Always an exciting time for schools and communities, I’m amazed how the weekends have become as popular as proms in the spring, everyone all dressed up complete with dinners and  limos—here’s to having a good time and creating memories!

Greenville dominated a decent Vandalia-Butler team in picking up their second win of the season, giving the senior class the chance to ring the Victory Bell on Homecoming night. An all-around team effort was highlighted by senior Brock Short’s 349-yard, 3 touchdown effort.  Short now has 1,829 yards rushing for the season with 23 TDs and holds school career marks with 3,456 yards, 40 TDs, and 244 points, all in less than two campaigns. Oh, I might mention that he also threw a touchdown pass and intercepted a pass to add to a memorable evening. Hats off also to the young and improving offensive line which creates the holes for Short’s running!

Ansonia, Versailles, and Tri-Village all won league games to continue winning seasons. The WOAC gets serious this weekend as four teams all sport 5-1 league marks coming to the final two games of the regular season. Ansonia hosts Preble Shawnee in a matchup of league leaders, National Trail tangles with TVS, and T-V has a non-conference game with Blanchester.  Should make for an interesting few weeks as these schools jockey for position in the upcoming playoffs in addition to league honors!

Greenville’s Kenna Jenkinson shot a 75 at Heatherwoode Golf Course in Springboro to  become a district qualifier in D-I and will tee it up Wednesday, again at Heatherwoode, as the  senior attempts to make the trip to Columbus and the state tournament for a third straight year. Centerville’s team overwhelmed the sectional field by a whopping 53 strokes and will be bidding to make it to state an eighth consecutive year.

The Bengals lost for a third time this fall on the final play of the game, this time to the Ravens, after taking the lead with under two minutes to go. Some questionable play-calling by Head Coach Zac Taylor in the fourth quarter contributed to the defeat as the Stripes continue  to discover how hard it is to repeat last year’s success. Still, there are 12 games left on the schedule but these three losses have to sting!

Meanwhile, up on the Lake, the Browns continue to shoot themselves in the foot (or should I say Cade York’s foot) as they fell to the Chargers. A horrendous interception thrown by Jacoby Brissett late in the game plus York’s two missed field goal attempts from 43 and 54 yards

spelled doom. York’s misses were to the right and reminded me of some of my golf shots  when I try to steer the ball instead of swinging away!

Baseball playoffs continue to the Divisional round with the Mariners, Phillies, Padres, and Guardians moving on after winning Wild Card matchups. Here’s a trivia question for you— name the six franchises (three from each league) to never have won a World Series. Answer to follow!

All top-ranked college football teams won over the weekend but look for plenty of great games and upsets this coming week. There will be a lot of shuffling in the rankings by this time next Monday as league races start to shape up.

The NBA and NHL regular seasons begin shortly—is anyone really interested right now with all of the other events going on?

Bean and corn dust is flying as farmers reap their harvest in what has been a great season  for doing fieldwork—remember to be careful on the roads as equipment moves along!

Those six teams never to win a baseball title? The Mariners, Rays, and Rangers in the AL and the Padres, Brewers, and Rockies in the NL. The Mariners and Rockies have never made it to the Fall Classic while the others have at least won league championships. We won’t even go into the Reds disastrous season in this column, maybe next week!!

Finally, if you’re looking for a new place to eat, try the Butcher Block just outside of London, south of I-70 on Route 56. Great atmosphere, great food, and a friendly staff all make for an outstanding dining experience! Have a great week!
