Cars no longer line up, strung east down Mt. Pleasant’s High Street from Adams, to wait for food distribution from the city’s primary food pantry. That hallmark of the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing both need within the community and also tight distancing rules to slow the spread of disease, is gone. The need to help people eat isn’t.

“There’s a hunger need here in our community,” said Dorine Lilly, the Community Compassion Network’s fundraising chairwoman.

At the start of October, CCN launched its annual month-and-a-half-long donation drive from the community. It’s the non-profit’s only official fundraiser of the year.

The lines are gone for a good reason. During the COVID-19 pandemic, distribution was conducted in the parking lot of The William & Janet Strickler Non-Profit Center, 1114 W. High St., where CCN maintains offices and storage.

On May 4, CCN shut down its outside distribution so that people who need food come inside and pick it up, said Peg Simon, the CCN board chairwoman.

CCN provides three different, but related services, through its Strickler space. There’s the food pantry, an infant pantry and a weekly distribution of a nutrition box that provides students on free-and-reduced lunches food for the weekend.

The food pantry provides food to approximately 1,465 people in 530 households, approximately 175 babies receive goods through the infant pantry and approximately 1,100 students are assisted through the nutrition box.
