The MSU football team goes head-to-head against a squad currently managed by a former coach

BOZEMAN, Montana – On Tuesday, Montana State and Nevada revealed a non-conference football game scheduled between the two past Big Sky competitors in 2026.

On Saturday, September 12, the Wolf Pack will host MSU at Mackay Stadium. Jeff Choate, Nevada’s present head coach, previously coached the Bobcats from 2016-19, and his current staff features former Bobcat stars and teammates Kane Ioane and Joey Thomas, alongside ex-MSU assistants Brian Armstrong and James Price.

From 1979 to 1991, the institutions faced each other every season as Big Sky opponents, with another match in 1996. Nevada holds the advantage in the series at 12-6, including four consecutive victories. The teams played a home-and-home series to kick off the competition in 1946 and 1947 (Nevada triumphed in both), and again in 1963 and 1964 (the Cats won both). One of the most notable games in the series, from the Bobcat perspective, was the 44-41 double overtime victory at Reno H. Sales Stadium in 1984.

The Bobcats conclude their 2024 season on Monday in the FCS Championship Game, boasting a perfect 15-0 record. Nevada wrapped up Choate’s inaugural season in Reno with a 3-10 mark.
