Comedian Hannah Berner kicked off her new year with some roasting and received a taste of her own medicine following tensions with Taylor Swift fans. The Summer House alum was a host for Netflix’s Torching 2024: A Roast of the Year, beginning with America’s current fascination with Luigi Mangione. Referring to the 26-year-old, who has been accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as “so hot right now,” the 33-year-old stand-up comic then took aim at Taylor Swift’s NFL superstar partner, Travis Kelce.

“Who knew besides Travis Kelce that you could gain such popularity with women by unloading into a billionaire?” she quipped during the Netflix special, which debuted on December 27, 2024. The OTT release garnered more attention this past week, leading more Swifties to engage with the popular quip, which understandably did not please the pop star’s supporters. Mangione, who rose to viral fame, had thousands swooning over his appearance. Nevertheless, this time, he took a back seat with Taylor Swift dominating the discussion.

As snippets of Berner’s segment gained traction on X, one user criticized her comment as “highly sexist and belittling.” Another individual called out the comedian for being “so at ease making the most misogynistic remark.” A further user stated, “This is merely disgusting misogynistic sentiment flaunted by hacks under the pretense of humor to gain approval from particular kinds of losers.” Someone else added, “stand-up comedians can’t be humorous without indulging in misogyny.”

A distinct group of X users defended Hannah, attributing the backlash to others not recognizing a “joke.” One user remarked, “It’s a roast. What were you anticipating? G-rated wholesome comedy?” Nonetheless, the prevailing sentiment online suggested that Berner was targeting another woman with something “incredibly sexist and demeaning” to “please men.”

Having referred to the Gossip Girl diva as a “c**t,” Berner’s comment was sharply criticized online, particularly as it emerged while the actress had recently filed a sexual harassment complaint against the It Ends With Us director and co-star, Justin Baldoni.

Later, Berner tried to clarify her actions, explaining that her set was recorded before Lively’s allegations against Baldoni surfaced. “To be completely clear, I support Blake xoxo,” the Bravo alum stated on her Instagram Stories.
