NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane swimming squad will compete once more this week as the program dispatches 14 members to Miami to engage in the FIU Sprint Invite held at the Florida International Biscayne Bay Aquatics Center commencing at 9 a.m. CT. on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Tulane is bringing along Layla Allen, Lise Coetzee, Charley Floyd, Paula Gaya Bisquerra, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Sydney Mullin, Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou, Catherine Russo, Gwen Shahboz, Eva Shawver, Rafaela Sumida, Ece Tanriverdi, Maya Wilson and Andrea Zeebe.

The FIU Sprint Invite will adopt a non-conventional format to accommodate coaches’ training adjustments. The meet employs a tournament-style competition for the 50s of all strokes.

The maximum allowable swimming events for each swimmer will be five.

Seeding: Entries will be seeded based on the top season times.

Scoring: 16-place invitational scoring; top 4 individuals score per team event.

The meet will include 18 events.

In the previous competition, the Eagle Holiday Splash in Ft. Myers, Fla. at the FGCU Aquatics Complex, the Tulane swimming and diving squad clinched victory in seven events and achieved 18 top three individual placements, securing second position overall with a score of 213.5 points. Maya Wilson triumphed in two individual events: the 75 free (37.18) and the 25 free (11.01), while finishing second in the 50 fly (25.15). Gwen Shahboz claimed victory in the 200 IM (2:05.39) and finished second in both the 25 back (13.11) and the 200 breast (2:20.05). Anna Behrman emerged victorious in the 3-meter dive with a score of 222.55 points. Andrea Zeebe won the 200 back (2:02.91) and placed second in the 50 back (26.94) and the 200 IM (2:06.54). Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou took first in the 200 butterfly (2:03.21). Catherine Russo emerged as the champion in the 25 fly (11.40), finished second in the 50 free (23.86) and came third in the 75 free (37.85). The 200 medley relay team, comprising Zeebe, Emma Brady, Wilson, and Russo, secured second place in their event with a time of 1:44.04. Lise Coetzee finished second in the 500 free (5:01.68). Paige McKenzie achieved third place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 217.20 points. The 100 free relay team of Russo, Coetzee, Wilson, and Olcaytu Hatipoglu secured third in their event with a time of 45.79.

Head Coach Amanda Caldwell is in her third year directing the program. The squad is coming off an impressive 2023-24 season, which resulted in 64 personal bests, 31 all-time top-10 school marks, four school records, an AAC individual title, an AAC Freshman of the Year Award, 11 National Invite Championship Qualifiers, a Zone Diver Qualifier, and an NCAA qualifier.

The program is bringing back 12 swimmers & divers from last season, including Anna Behrman, Emma Brady, Rachel Casebolt, Taylor Cekay, Reese Dunkenberger, Paula Gaya Bisquerra, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Paige McKenzie, Sydney Mullin, Gwen Shahboz, Ece Tanriverdi, and Andrea Zeebe. The team also welcomes 11 newcomers, including Layla Allen, Lise Coetzee, Charley Floyd, Phoebe Johnson, Varvara Gkiouzepa Petropoulou, Catherine Russo, Eva Shawver, Rafaela Sumida, Lily Von Herbulis, Kelsey Weddington, and Maya Wilson.

After this week’s events in Miami, Florida, Tulane will return home on Jan. 25 for a dual meet against Little Rock at 11 a.m. The team will conclude the home schedule and regular season by hosting West Florida on Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. The 2025 AAC Swimming Championship is set to take place from Feb. 19-22 in Dallas, Texas at SMU.
