MHS senior Rashid Kaamu, who relocated to the U.S. only two years ago from a refugee camp in Zimbabwe, enjoys manifesting his creativity through art and photography.

Having lived in America for just two years, Marshalltown High School senior Rashid Kaamu has found a means to express himself through art while capturing the essence of Americana via photography.

Kaamu is particularly captivated by the narrative elements of photography and how a single photograph can evoke feelings and share experiences with its audience. He is also intrigued by the relationship between photography and nature.

“I also enjoy engaging in digital design, typography, and drawing,” Kaamu shared, adding, “I’m not exceptionally skilled at it, but I take pleasure in it.”

Kaamu and his family were relocated to Marshalltown in January 2023 from a refugee camp in Zimbabwe.

“I’ve genuinely been welcomed by the friendly and inviting Iowan culture,” Kaamu remarked. “The generosity and kindness of the locals have made my adjustment so much easier. The community spirit is remarkable, and I’ve found it uplifting how everyone unites to support each other.”

Kaamu, who also holds a job at Hy-Vee while pursuing his studies at MHS, noted the area’s rich diversity and the variety of cultures represented.

“I’ve been astonished by the vibrant and varied life here,” Kaamu stated. “The diversity of cultures, cuisine, and customs is truly outstanding. It’s fascinating to observe how individuals from across the globe coexist and enrich the tapestry of American society. The focus on personal freedom and opportunity is very motivating.”

MHS art instructor Wade Judge commended Kaamu for “adding his unique perspective” to photography assignments.

While Kaamu is considering studying criminal justice as his major in college after high school, he also wishes to further his passion for photography post-graduation from MHS. He has not yet decided on a college, but mentioned receiving acceptance letters from multiple institutions.

“I’m excited to pursue higher education and explore new pathways that will shape my future,” Kaamu expressed.
