JACKSON TWP — It had been several weeks since Butler and Seneca Valley swimming faced each other in a contest prior to Thursday night’s sectional event.
However, they were not properly rested. With no school and assignments to occupy the swimmers’ time, both teams utilized their winter breaks for practice in the water.
“We managed to train, recover, then train once more,” shared Golden Tornado coach Troy Kroll, whose squad’s last meet occurred 15 days prior.

The following day after
That final encounter on Dec. 18 against Indiana prompted Kroll’s squad to plunge into festive training, engaging in two-a-day sessions and vigorously working in the weight room to gear up for the upcoming challenges.
The hosting Raiders had not participated in a competitive race since Dec. 18 as well. Both their boys’ team (96-43) and girls’ team (97-84) triumphed in their comeback on Thursday at Seneca Valley High School.
“We’ve been somewhat pushing them through a significant amount of demanding dry land and water drills,” stated Seneca Valley coach Brian Blackwell. “We anticipated they would experience a bit of fatigue. They were likely to struggle performing at their peak. … We still need to enhance our starts, turns, and the minor details.”
Blackwell mentioned that a considerable number of Raiders swimmers qualified for WPIALs during the team’s early meets, creating an opportunity for further training.
“We’re hitting the gas right now,” said Blackwell, whose team is scheduled for a tri-meet with Canon-McMillan and McDowell at home on Saturday.
Braden Rubinosky clinched victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly for the Raiders. His teammate Aidan Newman (100 free, 100 back) also secured a pair of individual wins, and Seneca Valley’s relay teams swept the competition.
On the girls’ side, twins Addison and Abigail Vance from Butler each won two events, keeping the Golden Tornado competitive despite the loss. Kroll expressed satisfaction with the performances from the duo and others.

“We’re uniting as a team,” Kroll remarked. “I believe that was somewhat the issue during the first half of the season: ‘What’s our identity? Who are we exactly?’ It required us two weeks of Christmas training to realize it.”
On Thursday, he observed “good, technical races. The kids appeared more focused. They looked fatigued. By this stage of the year … you should indeed be tired. You should feel worn out.”
Conditions will not become any more lenient for Butler immediately. Kroll is keen on ensuring his team is prepared when championships are at stake.
“I want to persist in maintaining the intensity and training throughout these final meets,” Kroll mentioned. “We aim for a few weeks to go (before postseason swimming). … It feels like running on one leg right now. We’re swimming with one arm right now.
“Many of the kids are fatigued. They’re exhausted, yet they’re competing. That’s the most crucial aspect. We focused on winning the walls, mastering the turns, and we still have progress to make.”
The Golden Tornado will host Pine-Richland on Wednesday.
