Winter Wonderland Alert: 3-7 Inches of Snow Expected This Weekend in NE Kansas!

A combination of sleet, snow, and freezing rain — resulting in slick and dangerous travel conditions — is anticipated on Saturday and Sunday across nearly all of northeast Kansas, as reported by the National Weather Service on Thursday.

On Thursday morning, the weather service issued a winter storm watch that will last from Saturday afternoon until Sunday afternoon, affecting all counties in northeast Kansas except those adjacent to Missouri.

The forecast predicts three to seven inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph by Sunday afternoon, according to the weather service.

Areas including Topeka, Abilene, Manhattan, and Kansas City, Kansas, are predicted to experience sleet, freezing rain, and moderate to heavy snowfall, as indicated by a graphic released by the weather service’s Topeka office.

Concordia, Marysville, and Hiawatha will likely see moderate to heavy snow, while Emporia and Garnett are expected to experience primarily sleet and freezing rain, the forecasters noted.

Expectations for treacherous travel and delays are prevalent throughout the affected regions, according to the forecasts.

“Freezing rain and sleet are more likely to occur early, while snow is anticipated later,” the weather service conveyed on Wednesday afternoon in a graphic displayed on its Topeka office website.

Freezing drizzle is projected to commence around 3 p.m. on Saturday, transitioning overnight into snow that is expected to persist until approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, according to the forecasts.
