Cal Kicks Off the Colorful Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational!

HONOLULU – The California women’s tennis squad started the New Year in Hawaii on Friday, where the Golden Bears achieved an 8-1 singles record on the inaugural day of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex. The new member Greta Greco Lucchina made her debut by winning in both singles and doubles during Hawaii’s annual event.
 
Cal secured victories in singles without dropping a set, with 35th-ranked senior Katja Wiersholm spearheading the team with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against UCLA’s Kimmi Hance. Other senior players also won in straight sets: Jessica Alsola defeated UCLA’s Ahmani Guichard 6-2, 6-3, while Makenna Thiel triumphed over Hawaii’s Hannah Galindo 6-3, 6-1. Additionally, graduate student Cami Brown outperformed the Bruins’ Mia Jovic 6-4, 6-3. Greco Lucchina overcame Hawaii’s Peppi Ramstedt 6-4, 6-2.
 
Sophomore Tiziana-Marie Schomburg bested Hawaii’s Sheena Masuda with a score of 6-3, 6-4, and freshmen contributed two more wins for Cal: Naomi Xu won 7-6(3), 7-6(3) against Hawaii’s Makeilah Nepomuceno and Sophie Hernandez triumphed over the Rainbow Wahine’s Joelle Lanz 6-3, 6-1. Cal’s Berta Passola Folch – a junior ranked 81st – lost in a tightly contested match against UCLA’s 53rd-ranked Elise Wagle 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-3.
 
In doubles on Friday, the Bears recorded a 1-4 result, with Alsola and Greco Lucchina overcoming Lanz and Emma Forgac 6-1.
 
Matches will resume on Saturday, starting at 4 p.m. PT.
