  • My twins are now teenagers, and they still enjoy going on family vacations.
  • We recently traveled to Saint Martin, and they cherished every minute.
  • I hope they continue to enjoy our family trips as they mature.

When I was carrying twins, people would comment, “You won’t be traveling anymore.” However, I proved them incorrect.

My twins are currently 19 years old, and we have been going on annual family vacations since their birth. When my younger daughter arrived 16 years ago, we maintained our travel habits.

Many people assume that once children reach 18, they will no longer want to travel with their parents, but that hasn’t held true for my kids. I hope this trend continues.

Our latest summer escapade was to Saint Martin

This summer, we explored the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin. The presence of two names with different spellings arises because it’s actually one island that belongs to two nations with open borders. The Dutch side is referred to as Sint Maarten, while the French side is known as Saint Martin.

A favorite part of our family vacation for my kids was having their own room. Each night, they connected by watching YouTube videos — ranging from cat grooming to gamers engaging in Observation Duty.

Although I didn’t relate to their late-night entertainment selections, I enjoyed hearing them discuss the videos over breakfast every morning, laughing at the amusing details. Even now, six months later, they still reminisce about the fun they had watching YouTube together.

One of our favorite experiences during the trip was a nighttime swim in the hotel pool — an activity we’ve enjoyed during other vacations as well. The pool, typically bustling during the day, was entirely ours at night. Swimming after sunset allowed us to bypass concerns over sunscreen or sunburns. My daughter has previously been on the swim team, but we all treasure our time in the pool. It’s truly a memorable bonding experience and a beloved family tradition.

I endeavor to involve my teens in the planning phase

One attraction in St. Maarten (the Dutch side) that frequently appeared in my online searches was a zipline course. I was cautious about bringing it up due to safety worries and the high cost, but when I finally did, my adventurous teens eagerly wanted to try it. They rationalized the expense by proposing it could serve as an early Christmas gift. Since it was challenging to know what to purchase for them, and it indeed seemed like a special experience, I acquiesced and allowed them to participate.

It turned out to be a standout moment of the trip. My kids declared it one of the best experiences on any of our vacations.

I hope that by involving them in the planning of our family getaways, they will remain enthusiastic about traveling with me.

We are already preparing for our next adventure

My three teens adored Sint Maarten/Saint Martin and claimed it was their favorite family vacation and preferred travel spot. Whether it’s swimming beneath the stars, giggling over YouTube videos, or tackling a zipline, it’s those shared experiences that hold the greatest significance.

My daughter aims to study abroad in Italy next year. We have already started looking into where we can stay during our visit. I hope that even after they complete their college education, they will still desire to travel with us.

Who knows? Perhaps one day, they will invite me to join them when they have families of their own. Naturally, I’ll participate as long as they agree to book me a separate hotel room, so I can watch peculiar YouTube videos, too. A mom can dream.
