Greetings, 2025!
This past month has been quite chaotic for our family here in Maine as we transitioned from Bath to Sheepscot. Things are finally starting to calm down, somewhat, and I’m anticipating some ice skating this week due to the extremely frigid temperatures and absence of snow, and then, hopefully, some snow prior to our Winter in Acadia Workshop and subsequently my yearly expedition to ascend Katahdin in Baxter State Park. January is indeed an exhilarating month!
While driving to Portland to collect our au pair yesterday, I observed the sky performing fascinating displays. I didn’t have much time, but since I was right off Route 1 in Brunswick, I was aware of a spot where I could pull over.
The vistas from the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge are among my favorite. This perspective looks southwest at the old Black Bridge, which once featured a deck for automobiles beneath the railroad bridge when I was younger, but has since been dismantled.
I wish we had a bit of snow to enhance the foreground, but I would gladly take a sky like this any day. It was truly remarkable! The wave patterns in the clouds result from orographic effects, in this instance, air traversing over the White Mountains. I spotted some lenticular clouds before capturing this image, but the trees obscure them from this angle.
I have some thrilling news regarding two significant publications of my work in the upcoming month. Stay tuned!
