The weather wasn’t too frigid for a snowball battle.
With temperatures lingering in the low-20s during the daytime on Saturday, Jan. 4, neither kids nor parents refrained from enjoying the winter spectacle surrounding Butler. This was the first substantial snowfall this winter suitable for sledding and constructing snowmen.
Martin Furman, residing about a block away from Father Marinaro Park, brought his son, Ezra, to the slope along Zeigler Avenue that Saturday afternoon.
“The last occasion we had a little snowfall, which I believe was earlier in December, we attempted to go sledding near the storage units by McQuiston Elementary, but there wasn’t enough snow; it was less than ideal. This is the first instance this winter when conditions have been favorable,” Furman remarked.
The McKeevers seized the opportunity presented by the snowy slope and went sledding. Parents Amy and Isaac McKeever took their daughters, Phoebe, 5, and Lydia, 3, for sled rides near Father Marinaro Park. After a few descents with her father, Phoebe embarked on some solo runs on the sled.
Also near Father Marinaro Park, Devin Rodgers pulled his 8-year-old daughter, Sophie Rodgers, around on a sled while both were bundled up to fend off the chill.
Numerous parents at Father Marinaro Park mentioned that they haven’t had the chance to take their children sledding for quite some time, especially with the mild winters over the past few years.
“No, we haven’t been out very often; there hasn’t been sufficient snow. We had this sled for a year before we could finally use it,” Shane Stone shared while enjoying the hills at Marinaro Park with his three children.
Whether it was in a front yard or one of the multiple parks around Butler, children were reveling in the snow throughout the day. Nadal Jackson played alongside his sisters, Maisie and Milani Myland, outside their residence that Saturday. The family’s trampoline turned into the primary battleground during the snowball fight, as the siblings bounced around attempting to dodge getting hit.
Butler faced perilous conditions on Friday, leading to school closures and diminished visibility. The National Weather Service previously informed the Butler Eagle that residents should brace themselves for a second storm on Sunday evening.
